“Emotional intelligence is the ability to sense, understand, and effectively apply the power and acumen of emotions as a source of human energy, information, connection, and influence.”
Robert K. Cooper. Ph.D.
One subject that I found sparingly or rather completely absent in all the 10 years of my combined secondary and tertiary education is emotional intelligence. We have gloriously celebrated intelligence quotient that we sidelined the emotional quotient in our educational systems.
Success in any field of life has a lot dependent on our emotional states. We cannot live above our emotions, we must only learn to be intelligent in managing it. A stable emotional state is important for proper functioning as a social entity which is core to every human.
It is worthy have a high cognitive ability, but it is more important to learn how to properly relate with others. Intelligence will profit nothing in isolation, making emotional quotient a necessity.
“It is very important to understand that emotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence, it is not the triumph of heart over head — it is the unique intersection of both.”
David Caruso
